  • Description

We plan to depart from the designated hotel in the morning and head for Whittier, a military harbor town. Along the way, you can admire towering mountains reaching straight into the sky, sparkling glaciers and shimmering lakes. Turnagain Bay winds its way gracefully, presenting a picturesque landscape. After passing through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, North America’s longest combined rail and road tunnel with a length of 4.05 kilometers, you will arrive in Whittier. Visit the town’s most famous landmark, the exterior of Begich Towers residential building, and enjoy the scenery of the military harbor pier (approximately 20 minutes in total).

Around noon, board the glacier and marine life cruise ship* (the round trip lasts about 3.75 hours, including a Western boxed lunch on board and English commentary), where you can feast your eyes on the magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers of Prince William Sound. The front face of the glacier is steep and sheer, covered with countless crevices on top. Refracted by sunlight, it glows with a deep dark blue hue. Low rumbling sounds echo from the glacier from time to time, allowing you to witness the breathtaking moment of glacier calving up close. You can also observe ice floes and the spectacular sight of glacial rivers flowing into the sea at close range, with chances to encounter various marine animals (sea lions, sea otters, seals, etc.) and local birds inhabiting the area. It is recommended to bring warm outerwear, a hat and other warm accessories. We expect to return to Anchorage around 20:00.

    # Whittier
A most distinctive town in Alaska, Whittier once served as a military harbor during the Cold War. The abandoned military barracks were preserved and transformed into Begich Towers, one of America’s most unique residential buildings. Most of the town’s over 200 residents live in this building, which houses a school, post office, supermarket and other facilities. Whittier also acts as a land transportation hub leading to many renowned glacier scenic spots. Surrounded by mountains standing 3,500 feet (approximately 1,067 meters) above sea level and shrouded in clouds all year round, it served as an ideal military base during World War II. Today, it has become a deep-water berth for world-class cruise ships, attracting tourists from all over the globe.
