Highlights
- We plan to take a direct or connecting flight in the morning to head to the national park and start a one-day brown bear sightseeing tour. Salmon migrate to different areas in different months, and brown bears usually migrate along the tracks of salmon. Therefore, you will be arranged to visit Katmai National Park or Lake Clark National Park to look for traces of brown bears based on your specific tour date. After the tour, we expect to return to Anchorage between 18:00 and 20:00.
-
Brown Bear Viewing at Katmai National Park from Late June to Late July and Early to Mid-September 2026:
Katmai National Park is renowned for watching brown bears hunt salmon. Upon arrival at Katmai National Park, please follow the instructions of park rangers and carefully learn the precautions for the brown bear reserve. Within the designated activity areas of the national park, you will have the chance to witness brown bears catching salmon or playing around. Brown bears in Alaska are skilled swimmers and adept at preying on sockeye salmon (also known as Atlantic salmon). Every summer and autumn, salmon living in the ocean swim back to rivers to spawn, marking the famous salmon run period. At this time, brown bears gather together to catch sockeye salmon with their bulky paws or powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth. -
Brown Bear Viewing at Lake Clark National Park from Late July to Late August 2026:
Salmon usually migrate back to Lake Clark National Park in August. The protected area of Lake Clark National Park covers a vast expanse with multiple spots for brown bear watching. This tour will visit one of the lakes at the end of the salmon migration route. The national park is only accessible by air. You will take a seaplane over the Alaska Range and the Aleutian Range, overlooking two active volcanoes from the air before landing at Lake Clark National Park. An experienced English-speaking guide will take you on a boat tour across the lake, allowing you to watch brown bears catch salmon in the water up close. With a bit of luck, you may also witness large schools of salmon turning bright red after spawning gathering in the lake, along with the delightful sight of full and satisfied brown bears playing and frolicking in the water.
